A heat treater for Doehler Jarvis Corporation for 24 years, he retired in 1987. Previously he worked 20 years at Monroe Auto Equipment. The son of Burl and Viola (Butler) Matzinger, he was born July 19, 1924, in Temperance, MI. Bernard was in the Civilian Conservation Corps prior to entering the US Navy during WWII. While in the Navy he served on the U.S.S. Caribou in the Philippines and Asiatic Pacific Theater. November 24, 1943, he married Lucille Eighmey in Samaria, MI. Bernard enjoyed camping, wood working, painting, archery and hunting. He was a member of Bedford Church of the Nazarene, U.A.W., Bedford Senior Center, and the Tomahawk Archers.
He is survived by his loving wife of over 62 years, Lucille; son, Wayne (Christine) Matzinger; daughter, Deborah Matzinger; 4 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Raymond.
Visitation will be held Thursday from 2 p.m. till 8 p.m. in the Bedford Funeral Chapel, 8300 Lewis Avenue, Temperance, MI. Funeral services will be held Friday at 11:00 a.m. in the Bedford Church of the Nazarene where he will lie in state after 10:00 a.m. officiated by the Pastor Rev. Vince Flippo. Interment will be private in Erie Union Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the church, Bedford Senior Center or V.A. Hospital. Online condolences may be shared at www.bedfordfuneralchapel.com
